A Child and Youth Advocacy Centre is a child-friendly facility uniting law enforcement, child protection, medical and mental health professionals, victim advocates, and court support workers.
It’s at this location that children, youth, and families can receive an individualized response after the occurrence of child abuse. Services available include prevention, intervention, prosecution, treatment, and support for victims and their families.
CYACs bring together a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) to provide a coordinated and comprehensive approach when abuse is suspected. CYACs seek to minimize system-induced trauma and support longer-term well-being by providing individualized care and connection to service, ideally under one roof.
Victim Services Durham Region (VSDR) is the Lead Agency of the Durham CYAC.
CYACs are a growing practice in Canada, with currently 50 centres either in development, implementation, or action across the country. Globally, there are over 1100+ operating CACs in the United States and 41 other countries.
CYACs are emerging as a best practice for supporting children, youth, and families who have experienced severe abuse and violence. This is due to the coordinated approach of multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) that offer holistic support at the time of report.
The Social Value Report* highlights positive outcomes of the CYAC model over the past 8 years. These include reduced emotional, financial, and physical hardship on abused children and youth. Children receive increased access to services, are refered more quickly, and care is provided to those with the most urgent needs. This access gets children and families the services needs as they develop.
In 2021-22, 7,436 child and youth victims of sexual abuse and 2,913 victims of physical abuse were served by Canadian CYAC's. Almost half of the CYAC's have support dogs that assist at the centres and throughout the court process, and 11 CYAC's across Canada offer remote testimony.
We are committed the protection, growth and development of families in the Durham community. We bring helping hands and heart to the children who have experienced hardships and challenges that need the guidence and resources that our team at the CYAC can deliver.
